Washington Park Lifeguard Team
2012 Washington Park Lifeguard Hours
Updated April 10, 2012 - NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY UNTIL MAY 26, 2012 - SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK!
The Michigan City Parks & Recreation Department staffs Red Cross certified lifeguards in a designated area at the Washington Park lakefront from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Guarded hours are 10:00AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday; and 10:00AM to 6:00PM Saturday and Sunday.
Flag System
| GREEN FLAG BEACH OPEN SWIMMING ALLOWED |
YELLOW FLAG BEACH ADVISORY SWIM WITH CAUTION |
RED FLAG BEACH CLOSED SWIMMING NOT ALLOWED |
The colored flag system indicates water quality at testing sites. If results are 235 mg/l or below, a green flag will wave indicating that the water quality results from the previous days' sample is satisfactory. If the results are 236 mg/l to 999 mg/l, a yellow advisory swim with caution flag will be raised. If sample results are over 1000 mg/l, a reg flag will be raised indicating the beach waters are closed. This system is a result of several years of data indicating that E.coli can sustain and replicate itself in our environment causing severe fluctuations with our water quality indicator (E.coli). Remember E.coli itself is not harmful but can indicate the presence of other pathogens.
PLEASE RESPECT LAKE MICHIGAN AND EXERCISE SOUND COMMON SENSE. PLEASE OBEY ALL BEACH RULES!
Beach conditions are posted on this web site Monday through Friday only, through Labor Day. For weekend conditions, please call (219) 873-1406 ext. 390 or check in at the front gate to verify if the guarded area is open or closed.
